Lenski (Olga's betrothed) arrives with his friend Onegin, and Tatyana, Olga's sister, realises he is the hero of her dreams.  But while Lenski sings of his love for Olga, Onegin, aloof and cold, shares with Tatyana his boredom of country life.  Later that evening, Tatyana composes a long love letter to Onegin.  The letter is delivered but Onegin tells her that marriage is not for him and he urges her to exercise more caution in the future.

At a party the following winter, Onegin, a reluctant guest of Lenski, overhears some uncomplimentary remarks. These cause him to avenge himself by flirting with Olga. In the ensuing argument Lenski challenges Onegin in a duel.  At sunrise the following morning Lenksi is shot and killed.

Four years later, Onegin returns to St. Petersburg to find Tatyana married to prince Gremin.  Onegin realises that he loves Tatyana and asks her to leave her husband.  She replies that whilst she loves Onegin, she must remain loyal to her husband.  She leaves, bidding the despairing Onegin farewell forever.
