"White Horse Inn" (Im
Weissen Rossl) was first performed in Berlin in 1931 and is still in the regular
repertoire of the Volksopera in Vienna. With it mixture of slapstick and
romance and its rich decor, it provides a link between the Viennese operettas of
Strauss, Lehar, Oscar Straus and Kalman and the spectacular American
"musicals" of Rodger and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe and Frank
Loesser.
