The story spans the early adult years in the life of
Denry Machin.
Denry is the entrepreneur of his time, he seizes his
opportunities when Lady Luck presents them and using all his inborn charm and
wit, not to mention cunning, he climbs the ladder to success. Of course,
being so dedicated to his quest, he fails to recognise the true love of gentle
Nellie, falling instead for the more obvious charms of the dancing teacher who
first paves the way for his meeting with his benefactor, the Countess of Chell.
True love wins through as ever and when Denry is made of Bursley, Nellie is by
his side.
