A Dutch sea captain, caught in
terrible seas as he tried to round the Cape of Good Hope, swore that he would go
on trying until the Day of Judgement. Satan heard this blasphemy and
condemned him and his crew to sail the seas for all eternity. An angel
intervened, however, to grant him a chance of redemption: once every seven years
the Dutchman was permitted to leave his ship to find a woman whose love would be
true to him after death. Her faithful love alone would lift the curse.
