The opera is set in Paris in the early 19th
century. Rudolph, a poet, lives an impoverished life in an attic in the
Latin Quarter with his friends, Marcel, a painter, Colline, a philosopher, and
Schaunard, a musician. There, one Christmas Eve, he meets and falls in
love with Mimi, a beautiful but consumptive girl who makes artificial
flowers. They begin a happy love affair. In Act II Marcel is
reunited with the flirtatious Musetta whom he loves passionately, but who has
deserted him for the attractions of the elderly Alcindoro. In Act III
outside the tavern by the Barrière d'Enfer one cold February morning, Mimi,
clearly ill, asks for Rudolph. He has become unreasonably jealous, and
decides that they should separate - but in the spring. He admits to
Marcel, however, that his concern is really for Mimi herself. It is
apparent that she is dying and Rudolph cannot afford to provide the comforts she
needs. Musetta and Marcel quarrel violently and Musetta flounces
off. In Act IV the men have returned to their old life and Rudolph and
Marcel recall their memories of Mimi and Musetta. Some dancing and
horseplay between the Bohemians is interrupted when Musetta brings Mimi, on the
point of death, to their attic. Mimi and Rudolph are reconciled before
Mimi dies.
