Paris in the summer of 1866 and Offenbach celebrates
and pokes fun at the spirit of the Second Empire.
The flimsy story is delightful nonsense upon which
the composer ranges a sequence of glorious melodies.
Suffice to say that a Swedish Baron and his wife
arrive in Paris to savour its delights. They are lured by Raoul and
Bobinet in supposing the Duchess's house to be a fine hotel and they both
experience the delights they keenly anticipated. Another visitor is a
Brazilian, eagerly awaiting to be fleeced - yet again! - but this time returning
home with Gabrielle, a glove maker - though a Colonel's widow at one point
during the plot.
Pauline is really a maid, but the plot allows her to
be a Swiss Admiral's wife. Metella is courted by Raoul, Bobinet and the
Swedish Baron.
Enough! You are lost!
