"Carmen" - A different approach, by John Heath, Director

Underlying Bizet's sumptuous score for "Carmen" is a passionate love story beset with problems from its almost frivolous start to its dramatic conclusion.  The journey the main protagonists take throughout the work is as relevant today as it was in both Bizet's time and the time of Prosper Merimee on whose story the opera is based.

This opera is often presented by amateur companies and yet because of ever-present financial constraints, the visual presentation can rarely match the scale of the score and the magnitude of the emotion.  Because of this, we have taken the bold step of presenting the opera in a contemporary setting.  The traditional approach to presentation generally results in the members of the chorus being utilised as a group, "The Chorus", rather than as individual characters.  In a contemporary setting chorus members can become realm people who are affected as individual by the unraveling story of the main protagonists.

Furthermore, this opera has been presented by a number of neighbouring societies and as out catchment areas overlap, we wanted, particularly for such a work as "Carmen", to present to our audience a new experience.

Though set in the present time, we have avoided the gimmicks and quirks often used in the professional theatre when period works are transplanted to the present.
