The real Macbeth reigned from 1040 to 1057 and was
apparently quite a just king by the standards of the time.
At the time the opera opens Edward the Confessor was
on the English throne and Duncan was the King of Scotland. Duncan had
entrusted to his next of kin Macbeth the task of quelling the rebel armies;
Macbeth had returned from a successful campaign in Norway with the taste for
royal power.
Duncan's son were not of age, however he had named
his son Malcolm his heir by royal decree.
