On the West Side of New York during the last days of Summer, two rival gangs
live their lives in an elaborate game of cat and mouse. The Jets regard
the street as their territory. Their opponents are the Sharks, a Puerto
Rican gang who, to the Jets, are the invaders against whom they will protect
their property with fists and, if necessary, more dangerous weapons.
The warring gangs will close ranks against the police; no one will break
faith with their unwritten code, nor let the law take revenge for a slashed ear
or a blacked eye.
