The musical begins badly for Charity, a
trusting, romantic dime-a-dance hostess at the Fan-Dango ballroom. She is
dumped by her fiancé, who abandons her in a lake and makes off with her
savings!
True romance beckons with a famous film star,
Vidal Vittorio, and then, more optimistically, with Oscar Lindquist, a tax
accountant whom she meets when they get stuck in a lift, (sorry, an 'elevator'),
at the local YMCA.
Is this the real thing? Is this the
marriage that Charity has so long sought to deliver her dream of a perfect
partnership?
"Sweet Charity", first performed in
1967, is based on Fellini's "Nights of Calabinia".
